Ekklesia

Ekklesia was an ordinary civic word before it was a religious one: a called-out assembly of citizens gathered to make decisions.

That background shapes the New Testament use. The church in Scripture is people gathered, not a building, and the word carries the sense of being summoned rather than volunteering. It is a called assembly, which is why belonging is described as being added rather than joining.
