Dunamis

dynamis (Greek)

Acts 1:8

Power in the sense of ability or capacity to do something.

Dunamis is the word behind power in Acts 1:8 and behind the miracles described in the Gospels. It points to capability rather than authority — being able, not merely being permitted.

English gets dynamic from it, though the comparison to dynamite is modern and misleading. The New Testament use is steadier than an explosion: strength given for a purpose, usually witness and endurance.
