Charis (Grace)

Charis is the New Testament word for grace. In everyday Greek it described a gift or a kindness shown by someone with the power to withhold it.

Paul uses charis to describe salvation precisely because the word rules out earning. Grace that can be worked for is wages, not grace. The same word sits behind thanksgiving in Greek, which is a useful clue: grace received naturally produces gratitude, not obligation.
